Core Web Vitals are a ranking factor, but that is not why they matter

The SEO benefit of a fast site is real but modest. The conversion benefit is the part that pays for the work.

Every performance pitch leads with rankings. It is the weakest argument available.

What the ranking effect actually is

Core Web Vitals are a tiebreaker. They matter when two pages are otherwise comparable, and they matter much less than relevance, authority or intent match. Fixing your LCP will not outrank a genuinely better page.

What does move

Conversion. A site that responds in 400ms instead of four seconds does not just rank slightly better, it loses far fewer people between landing and enquiry. That is measurable in revenue rather than in impressions.

How to approach it

Set a performance budget and enforce it in CI. Speed that is not enforced automatically decays within two release cycles, because there is always one more script somebody needs.
